Lonergan Research recently worked with Senator M Faruqi and The Greens to uncover people’s attitudes towards student debt in Australia.

Completed in June 2023, as changes to HECS Debt programs came into place, the objective was to understand concerns around growing student debt levels, whether Australians feel the current student loan system is fair, and levels of support for indexation of student debt due to inflation.

Some of the key research discoveries:

• Close to half (47%) of Australians think the current student loan system is unfair.
• Over a third (37%) of Australians believe they are informed about Australia’s student loan system.
• Over three quarters (77%) of Australians with student debt are concerned about their student debt, while close to two thirds (64%) of Australians are concerned about student debt generally in Australia.
