1 in 5 Aussie businesses suspect they aren’t paying staff correctly

We recently worked with Yellow Canary on their State of Payroll Compliance report, which focuses on exploring the payroll compliance awareness and understanding of Business Leaders across the country. The research was conducted in the lead-up to the criminalisation of wage theft under the Closing Loopholes Acts, starting 1 January 2025.

The research uncovered a wide range of concerns and challenges for Australian businesses relating to payroll compliance, with as many as one in five suspecting they aren’t paying their staff correctly. It also examines attitudes towards regulatory reforms and the Closing Loopholes Acts, adoption and perception of compliance technologies

Other key findings include:

  • 40 per cent of payroll bosses were concerned the new wage theft laws would increase their administrative burden.
  • One third of respondents confirmed there had been a payroll issue in the past that they believe had been corrected, 22 per cent had recently identified an issue and were in the process of correcting it.
